The world's cuisine - from budget to banquet ![]() From budget bites to Michelin starred restaurants, Birmingham’s culinary offer is better than ever…and certainly one of the best in the UK: in 2004 Birmingham beat 15 other UK cities to win the EthniCity 2004 award recognising the quality and diversity of the city’s food and 2005 the city was crowned Curry Capital of Britain. Suitably twinned with Lyon, Europe’s gastronomic capital, Birmingham is a gourmet’s delight. The city can boast being home to some of the country’s finest restaurants including the Michelin-starred Simpsons and Jessica’s or Bank, with its contemporary twist on the classics. Birmingham’s spirit of invention certainly extends to its food – the city gave birth to one of the UK’s most popular dishes. Baltis were introduced to the country in the 1970s by Birmingham’s Kashmiri community – there are now over a hundred “Balti houses” in Birmingham serving the sweet and spicy dish, to be eaten with the legendary giant naan breads. Balti houses remain open to early morning hours, so a balti is a great way
to finish off an evening – though you might just find yourself enjoying
Birmingham’s nightlife so much that you forget to eat! With a reputation
as one of the UK’s biggest party cities, you’ll find whatever you’re
after: some scintillating salsa dancing, relaxing to some cool jazz, or perhaps
just a quiet pint in a traditional canalside pub. If you would like the evening
to continue late into the morning, there are plenty of stylish late night bars
and clubs to choose from, or if you are willing to try your luck, head out to
the UK’s largest casino at Star City, complete with full Las Vegas razzmatazz. |
